  • Everything You Need to Know

The classification is historical rather than scientific. Diamond, ruby, sapphire and emerald were designated 'precious' by 19th-century European jewellers due to their rarity and hardness. Every other gem — regardless of beauty or value — is termed 'semi-precious'. Many semi-precious stones (fine Paraiba tourmaline, tanzanite, alexandrite) can today exceed the value of the precious four.

Natural gemstones carry inclusions, colour zoning and a specific refractive behaviour that laboratory-grown counterparts rarely replicate exactly. We recommend examining stones under 10× magnification and, for significant purchases, obtaining certification from GIA, IGI or GRS.

Every stone in our vault is traced to its mine of origin. Birla Enterprise works only with mines and cutting houses that meet the Kimberley Process for diamonds and the responsible-sourcing standards of the Responsible Jewellery Council.

We provide independent certification from GIA (Gemological Institute of America), IGI, GRS and Gübelin on request. Our in-house laboratory in Jaipur issues detailed provenance reports for every significant piece.
